So, Where Are We Now

Well, we are two short weeks away from being finished with 1st grade. I can't believe how fast it has gone.

Currently Jake is working on the following:

In math, he is writing math sentences for word problems like--

Frances had some peanut butter sandwiches for lunch. Albert had 7 tuna sandwiches for lunch. Frances ate 2 of her sandwiches so she had the same number of sandwiches as Albert. How many sandwiches did Frances have to start with?

Jake wrote __ - 2 = 7. Then he solved the problem.

In history we are currently reading about Ethelred the Unready. The Danes were a real problem in England, to say the least. So, Ethelred tried, as many kings before him had, to get rid of them. He tried to pay the Danes to leave England. They came back, for more money of course. When the English revolted because of the high taxes to pay off the Danes, Ethelred came up with a not-so-brilliant plan to kill them all (men, women and children). The English went along with him and killed all the Danes living in England. It didn't work out so well because one of Danes murdered was a Danish princess who had married an English Lord. When her brother, Sweyn, King of Denmark found out, he decided to avenge his sister's death.

In nature study Jake is still learning about birds. He has already learned the American Robin, Northern Mockingbird, Northern Cardinal and Mourning Dove by sight and sound.

In literature we just finished reading a children's version of King Lear. We are still reading Holling Clancy Holling's Seabird.

For our bedtime story we are reading J.M.Barrie's Peter Pan and Wendy.
